Did you know

December 19, 2025

Did you know the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority(MWAA) was created in 1987, when control of DCA and IAD shifted away from the federal government to a public authority formed by an interstate compact between Virginia and Washington, DC, with Congressional approval?

Did you know MWAA is not a federal agency, and its Board ofDirectors is appointed—not elected—by:

• The Governor of Virginia

• The Mayor of Washington, DC

• The Governor of Maryland

• The President of the United States

These appointed board members make decisions that directly impact airport safety, operations, and the livelihoods of frontline employees.

DID YOU ALSO KNOW?

MWAA employees do not currently have true collective bargaining rights—and that change requires action beyond the bargaining table.

Here’s how YOU can help make collective bargaining areality:

• Contact the appointingauthorities (VA, MD, DC, and the White House) and demand they supportcollective bargaining rights for MWAA employees

• Urge MWAA Board members toformally recognize and support collective bargaining

• Support legislative action at the federal and state level that protects labor rights within interstate compact authorities

• Share our message publicly so transparency and accountability stay in the spotlight

Our members show up every day to protect the traveling public. Now we’re asking for support to ensure a fair voice at work. Accountability starts with those who appoint the Board . Collective bargaining is the path forward.
